Dr (Mrs) Wakako Hironaka

Dr Hironaka is a former Member of the House of Councillors (Upper House of the Japanese Diet) and former Vice Chair of the Democratic Party of Japan. She was first elected to the House of councilors in July 1986, served four terms and retired in July 2010.
While in politics, Dr Hironaka served as a State Minister, Director-General of Environment Agency in the Hosokawa Cabinet (1993-1994), Chair of Research Committee on Economy, Industry and Employment (2004-2007), Chair of Committee on Fundamental National Policies, Member of Environment Committee, Chair of the EU-Japan Parliamentary Group, etc.
Dr Hironaka had also been active internationally as a Vice Chair of Global Environmental Action (GEA), Chair of Globe Japan (Global Legislators Organization for a Balanced Environment), Member of World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development, Member of Earth Charter Initiative, International Science Advisory Board of UNESCO, etc.
Since her retirement from politics, Dr Hironaka serves as Director-General of GEA, Board Member of Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Earth Charter Commission, PA International Foundation and others.
